FAW today
On 25th Aug. 2000, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee-Jiang Zemin came back to FAW for survey after several years of separation, He wrote when he seeing the changed took place in FAW, “This time I came to FAW for another time, I am very gratified after seeing rapid development and satisfactory prospect of FAW and producing numerous men of ability. Great changes have taken place in FAW, which make me confused to look for her old scene”.
“Making me confused to look for her old scene” fully represents General Secretary’s support and encouragement to this old state-owned enterprise with nearly semicentennial history.
FAW is one of backbone enterprises of China’s Automobile Industry, of which head office is located in the beautiful city of forests–Changchun, in Songliao Plain of North-east China, occupying floor area of 21650 thousands m2 and building area of 3940 m2 and having total staff of 120 thousands. At present, FAW has become one of domestic superlarge-scale trans-regional, trans- industry and trans-boundary industrial enterprise groups, which attracts and controls assets of more than 60 billion Yuan and is integrated with scientific research, development, production, sales, finance and foreign economy and trade. In 2002, FAW produced and sold 580 thousands of different automobiles and sales income reached 84 billion Yuan. Since 1992, FAW had always been listed in the top 10 in 500 large-scale enterprises throughout the country. In 2001 and 2002, FAW was appraised as one of “The most outstanding top ten enterprises” consecutively. Over 50-year construction and development, especially the stimulation of market economy, great changes have taken place in FAW and FAW exudes vigorous vitality and vigor.
Changes took place in FAW mainly focus on the following aspects:
As for the product structure, FAW changed from single truck to developing “Medium-duty, heavy-duty, light-duty, car, minitype and passenger car” simultaneously, especially to car as leading product. The medium-duty and heavy-duty truck base, the car base with production capacity of 400 thousand cars as well as the light-duty car and minitype car base had been formed. FAW mainly has three self-owned brands such as Jiefang, Hongqi and Xiali, and brands such as Audi , Volkswagen, Toyota and Mazda manufactured by Chinese-foreign Equity Joint Ventures
As for the enterprise structure, FAW changed from single plant system to modern corporation system. Presently, FAW has one professional plant affiliated to FAW, three subsidiary companies, twenty eight whole-funded subsidiary companies, fourteen holding companies and twenty six mutual share-holding companies. FAW’s productions bases are distributed in fourteen provinces throughout the country.
As for the market structure, FAW changed from single domestic market to both domestic and international markets. FAW participates in international automobile trade and cycle actively while expanding domestic markets continuously and establishes global procurement and marketing system primarily. Three assembly plants had been built abroad; five regional corporations had been established in Asia, Africa, Europe, America, nineteen subsidiary companies and offices successively, FAW has established business relations with more than one thousand enterprises, trading companies, distributors and agents in over eighty countries and regions. Up to the present, FAW had exported entire car of more than 30 thousands, including more than 20 models of cars, and the products produced by FAW can be found in over 70 countries and regions.
As for the capital structure, FAW changed from single capital structure to diversified capital structure. FAW has three listed companies- FAW Car, FAW Xiali and FAW Sichuan by means of restructuring the joint-stock system. FAW established several joint ventures with world-famous transnational corporations in Germany, Japan and USA, etc through developing mutual-benefit and win-win partnership, this help FAW to form layout of capital diversification.
Enhancing the development capability of self-innovated products and capacity of making technological progress have always been basic foothold in the development of FAW, FAW has always been tracing the international and “four-new” development step and increasing fiscal investment in science and technology, presently, FAW has technology center with the strongest core capacity and integrated with scientific research, product development and process material development. FAW comes up the China’s advanced level in the aspects of technical researches on operational stability of automobile, multi-valve technology (MVT) and diesel engine fuel injection, etc.
The past FAW cannot compare with FAW today. The “Old enterprise” established under Planned Economic System has now become a good example of adapting to the market economy to all state-owned enterprises after suffering a lot.
In the near future, the People's Republic of China will give praises to FAW when we see new FAW with international competitive strength developing into an enterprise playing an important role in the World Auto Industry.
